What is a Debit Card

Submitted on April 13, 2010 by

We more often hear of credit cards and not much about the debit card. A debit card is also a form of plastic money and is very useful to people. Even if you have a credit card you can also keep a debit card. You will find that a debit card is actually better than a credit card once you have understood more about it.

When you use a debit card to purchase something it is immediately charged to your account. The card is directly linked to your bank account. In case you do not have money in the account the debit card will simply not work. It is good as it can keep you in control of your purchases and it does not allow you to overspend which can very easily happen in the case of using a credit card.

It is safer to use a debit card when you are travelling. A debit card has a four digit pin number that is only known to you and it cannot be used by anyone else. So in case you lose the debit card you need not worry too much as the person cannot know the pin number and the card will not work. All you need to do is get another one from the bank. However in case your credit card is stolen and you do not even know about it for a few days it can be used easily as it requires no pin number. You will need to inform the bank and stop all transactions from the credit card that is stolen.

A debit card is limited to the money that you have in your bank account. And a credit card is limited to the credit card limit that the bank has fixed up and it is most likely going to be more than the money that you may have in your bank account. Credit card spending can make you go into debt without you even realising it. Between the two a debit card is definitely a safer and better option especially if you want to keep yourself and your expenses in control.
